What happens in the brain

The very machinery you rely on to think clearly is partially taken offline at the exact moment you need it. The three stages of a hijack

Something registers as a threat: a pointed question, a challenge to your competence, a surprise number, a tone of voice. It is often not the objective event but its meaning that fires the amygdala, which is why the same trigger lands differently on different days.

Surge

The sympathetic nervous system activates. Heart rate spikes, breathing shortens, attention narrows to the threat, and stress chemistry floods the system. Judgement contracts. This is where the reaction, the snap, the freeze, the defensive email, happens.

Aftermath

The initial surge peaks in seconds, but adrenaline and cortisol can take twenty minutes or more to clear if nothing is done. This is why you stay reactive well after the moment has passed, and why the regret usually arrives only once the prefrontal cortex comes back online.

How to recognise a hijack in yourself

The signs are physical before they are mental: a sudden surge of anger or fear, a racing heart, a tight chest or shallow breathing, heat in the face, tunnel vision, or the impulse to attack or withdraw. The most reliable marker is intensity out of proportion to the situation. If your reaction is bigger than the moment seems to warrant, the amygdala is likely driving. Learning to catch these signals early, a skill called interoception, is what makes it possible to intervene at all.

How to stop and recover from an amygdala hijack

You cannot prevent the initial trigger, but you can shorten the hijack and soften how often it happens. Three levers, in order of speed:

In the moment, lengthen your exhale. A slow, extended out-breath activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the vagus nerve and begins lowering arousal within a few breaths. Then silently name the emotion, "this is anger," "that is fear." Naming reliably reduces amygdala activity and re-engages the prefrontal cortex. Over time, raise your baseline. Hijacks fire far more easily when your system is already activated by poor sleep, chronic stress, or thin recovery. Fewer situations trigger a hijack, and the ones that do are less severe. This is the difference between white-knuckling your reactions and changing the system that produces them.
